Winefront review of 2015 Pagan and 2016 Wizard

Koltz The Pagan Shiraz 2015

Posted on 25 October 2017.

Clever winemaker is Mark Day, and also a lovely chap. He dries the grapes out on racks for seven weeks or more to make this ‘Moda Amarone’ style.

He’s knocked it out of the park this vintage. Chocolate, almonds, earth, dried herbs and flowers, black fruit, polished leather. Full bodied, thick ripe sheets of toothsome tannin, all that almond and dark chocolate, spice and dried fruit intensity, acidity is fresh but not intrusive, and the power of the finish is something else. A wine for quiet contemplation, or rowdy conversation. Either or.

Koltz The Wizard Shiraz 2016

A ripasso style. Not sure why it’s called The Wizard, but I don’t mind the name.

Cherry, almond, some earth, maybe a kind of beef jerky thing going on?, a little lift and spice. Full bodied, but punchy and bursting with cherry and almost spiced blood orange acidity, sticky ribs of tannin, intense flavour, and pretty good length, chalky tannin pushing it out. It’s perhaps a little skittish at present, but the makings seem good.
